The IEP Process Video

All children ages 3 through 21 recieving any type of special education services must have an Individualized Education Program prepared for them. It is the product of a team that includes:
  • the parents
  • one regular education teacher
  • one special education teacher
  • a representative of the school that is knowledgable about the curriculum and the resources available
  • other individuals that have knowledge or expertise regarding the child
  • and when appropriate the child with the disability

The meetings goal is to have parents and school personnel jointly decide the child's needs, what services will be provided, and what the anticipated outcomes may be. The IEP puts into writing what the child's needs are and also what special education and related services the child will recieve. It is a tool to ensure that each child is provided with services appropriate to their needs.

The IEP itself will include:
  • the assessments that will enable the student to participate in the general classroom
  • state how the student's disability affects their academic achievment
  • annual measurable goals including benchmarcks to help the child be involved and make progress
  • list the aids and services the child needs
  • an explanation of the extent to which the child will not participate in the general classroom activities
  • list how the parents will be informed of their child's progress
